====== Repositories ======

A **notebook** is a collection of pages that are linked to each other. Typically all pages within a notebook belong to the some project; although it is also very common to have a "dump" or "scratch" notebook were all odds and ends end up.

**If you run zim for the first time** you get the "Open notebook" dialog asking you to select a notebook. Assuming you don't have any content yet you should start with adding an empty (or non-existent) directory as a notebook. When you select this new notebook and open it, all pages you create in zim will be placed within that directory.

You can have multiple repositories, for example for separate projects. Or you can have a single notebook for all your stuff. In general when you have separate groups of pages that do not interlink it is best to put these groups in separate repositories. That way **zim** remembers the state and history of each of these groups independent of the others.

When working with several repositories you can get to the "Open notebook" dialog from **zim** using the "//File//->//Open//" menu item.

If you don't want to see the "Open notebook" dialog each time you start zim, you can set a default using the "Set Default" button in this dialog. The default can either be a directory or the name of one of the repositories in the list.
